Cold Glue vs Hot Melt vs Self-Adhesive Labelling: Which Should You Choose

Cold glue vs hot melt labeling is one of the most consequential early decisions in designing a labelling station, because it affects running cost, line speed and how the label performs across different container shapes and materials. Self-adhesive technology adds a third option with its own trade-offs. This guide compares all three directly to help decide which fits a specific product and production volume.

How Each Technology Applies a Label

Cold glue systems apply a water-based adhesive to pre-cut labels fed from a stack, with no heating step required. Hot melt systems heat a solid adhesive — typically 275-325°F — before application, giving strong, fast-setting adhesion. Self-adhesive (pressure-sensitive) systems use labels pre-coated with adhesive, peeled from a liner and pressed directly onto the container with no glue application step on the machine at all.

Cost Comparison

Cold glue is consistently the lowest running cost per label, which is why it dominates very high-volume categories such as beer, where the adhesive cost saved across millions of units becomes significant. Self-adhesive labels cost more per unit, because the adhesive is manufactured into the label itself rather than applied separately and cheaply by the machine. Hot melt typically sits between the two on a per-unit basis, trading some of cold glue’s cost advantage for stronger adhesion performance.

Speed and Changeover

Self-adhesive systems generally offer the fastest changeover between label designs, since there is no glue pot to clean or adjust — a real advantage for producers running several SKUs or shorter production batches. Cold glue and hot melt both involve a glue reservoir that needs to be managed and, periodically, cleaned, which adds time when switching label formats, though both remain highly efficient for long, single-format production runs.

Substrate and Container Compatibility

Cold glue performs best on relatively simple label materials and standard container shapes; some specialty film labels do not adhere as reliably with cold glue as they do with hot melt or self-adhesive. Hot melt generally handles a wider range of shapes and materials well, thanks to its strong, fast bond. Self-adhesive is the most flexible for unusual container geometries and premium label materials, since the label’s own adhesive layer is engineered specifically for the application.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Very high volume, standard container, thin margin per unit → cold glue.
  • Varied container shapes, need for strong adhesion at speed → hot melt.
  • Frequent SKU or label changes, premium presentation → self-adhesive.

Many producers running multiple product lines end up using more than one technology across different SKUs rather than forcing every label onto a single system. AXTRA’s labelling machines and combined labelling systems can integrate more than one adhesive technology into a single line.
